Helping the Hungry

June 19, 2020

As a tanker driver for Hawk Logistics and Centerline Drivers, Efosa Harry Ogiorio helps people keep roofs over their heads by transporting limestone from a plant in Texas and hauling it to a manufacturing facility that makes shingles. But his real calling is in helping the homeless.

A 20-year veteran of non-profit work in the US and Nigeria, Efosa started Big and Caring Heart, a not-for-profit organization based in Dallas that aims to eradicate hunger and homelessness in the United States, in 2016. His organization helps feed and clothe homeless people in North Texas and around the country and runs a weekly food bank, offers showers for the homeless and is working toward building a housing program for the homeless in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex.

“Before the pandemic, we fed more than 200 homeless people weekly,” Ogorio said. “We also give out clothes and shoes.”

While COVID-19 forced him to stop feeding the homeless for a few months, he expects to start again in July. In the meantime, he has been working with contacts in Birmingham, Ala.; Chicago; Jackson, Miss.; Las Vegas; Laredo, Texas; Shreveport, La.; and Tulsa, Okla., to plan for expansion and next steps.

"I’ve been doing this for 22 years,” he said. “This is what I love to do, I love to help people."

In fact, he started charity work when he was 21 and living in Nigeria. He founded one of Africa’s largest relief service providers for homeless lepers, the Great Harry Foundation, which helps those recovering from leprosy get physical and social help across Nigeria.

When he started driving in Texas in 2015, he also wanted to find ways to help. So he started using his own money to feed the homeless on $600 per week. He would solicit help and donations from truck drivers he met on the road, which led to connections to help in other cities. Soon he started getting help from churches and

organizations in the metroplex as well as a local Walmart. He also started the True Love with Efosa radio show, which discusses homelessness and efforts to eradicate it. His goal is to help as many people as possible and help people get into charity work.

“This is basically my life,” he said. “When I see humanity suffering, I want to look for a way to help them. A lot of people love to do community service. There are many good people in the US who want to help.”
