What is Uber Freight (and why we’re better)

If you want to move goods from one location to another, you may have come across Uber Freight as an option. Not sure what this is? Not to worry, we’ll explain. We’ll also tell you why it may not be as good as it seems. But first, let’s talk about what Uber Freight is.

Uber Freight: What it is and how it works

Most people are familiar with Uber’s rideshare service. If you’re not, it’s like a taxi service, except that it involves the use of someone’s personal vehicle (and the licensing requirements aren’t necessarily as stringent as they are for someone driving a taxi).

Basically, if you want to go somewhere fairly local and don’t want to drive, you just download the Uber app, enter the pick-up and delivery addresses and someone will arrive at your location. From there, they will take you to your desired destination and drop you off at the door. Uber Freight offers the same type of service for goods versus people.

With Uber Freight, you book your order by providing all of the required information—such as pick-up location, drop-off location, and delivery timing—and you’re given a price quote. If you decide to book the transport, it is assigned to one of Uber’s carriers for pick-up and delivery.

Sounds good, right? Of course, it does! How can you beat having your goods picked up and delivered any time you want simply by booking your order with the Uber Freight app? The answer to this question lies in the service’s online reviews.

Don’t take our word for it

As a savvy business professional, we don’t expect you to just take our word that Uber Freight may not be as good as it seems. In fact, we encourage you to do your own research to learn more about what others think of Uber’s freight-moving service.

If you look at the Uber Freight app in the Google Play store, for instance, you have access to thousands of reviews posted by actual app users. Take a moment or two to read them and learn more about their interactions with Uber Freight. While some are positive in nature, not all of them reflect a good experience.

As an example, on September 22, 2021, one reviewer wrote, “…the usability of the app has gone down considerably. Anytime I click on the filter options once, I can never click on them again. I have to restart the app each time...” On October 14, 2021, another reviewer wrote, “…uber freight is a complete joke due to their lack of communication…They tied up my trailer for 2 weeks so far.”

The Apple App Store has similar testimonials. On February 20, 2020, a transport professional who appears to have worked for Uber as a freight hauler wrote, “Arrived 30min early at Shipper for 1pm appt. Got out after 7pm…At Receiver same thing, 4hrs there.” The reviewer went on to say that these delays caused the delivery deadline to be missed, and they weren’t even compensated for their additional detention time. On November 16, 2019, a different reviewer noted that the app couldn’t go a full week without showing some type of error.
